Reflection on film trailer research -
Analysing the film trailers allowed me to gather a view on the typical layout and conventions found in film trailers. I have understood, for example, that a trailer is typically 30 seconds to 1 minute in duration which means it is concise and snappy (usually featuring short camera shots and fast editing).
When analysing my genre-specific trailers, I got a far clearer understanding for the conventions found in typical horror-psychological film trailers that audiences expect to see in a trailer of this genre. I found that the mise-en-scene is repetitively dark by using poor source and artificial lighting to create a mysterious, foreshadowed mood. As in one of the trailers I analysed, The SIlence of the Lambs, we are strongly positioned to identify the protagonist (Jodie Foster) and the antagonist who we oppose (Anthony Hopkins). This creates the audience to form an emotional attachment to the central-character which makes the viewer watch the trailer more passionately and engaged meaning that they are more likely to want to watch the full film.

Reflection on film poster research -
In my film poster research, I have understood that posters are used as a huge and important marketing tool for a film to be exhibited to audiences. Unlike a trailer outlining the plot and genre of the film, a film poster has to indicate the genre through the image featured and colours used. Text is also used in some posters as a way to give a brief outline of what the film may be about. I might consider using a short sentence in the form of text on my poster as a way to connote the genre and the plot to the viewer.
I believe that poster research has helped me deconstruct the typical conventions found in general productions and my genre-specific posters.

Reflection on film magazine cover research -
The film magazine research has given me a good understanding of the codes and conventions found in film magazine cover pages. I have found that there is a main cover line which usually relates with the colour scheme used and the background image, with a few other cover lines. The masthead is featured boldly as a way for the viewer to recognise the publisher. This is also found with iconic music magazines that I researched in my AS media coursework such as NME - always featuring the magazine name clearly at the top band of the page.
I believe that after this research, I am confident in creating a authentic film magazine cover.

MEDIA STUDIES - AN INTRODUCTION |
Although this book was first published in 2006, I still found some content within very helpful in my research as it widened my knowledge about aspects towards the horror-genre and film. I borrowed this book from my local library.
|
I also took this book out of Reading Library. This book was published in 2009, so was more current than the other book which I read, I found the information within this publication very useful to my knowledge about horror-genre and films. Historic knowledge addressing the horror industry demonstrated to me how genres evolve over time. I plan on using information which I gained from this book to apply to my production.

Film Magazine evaluations
In analysing the film magazine cover pages, I have learned and identified stereotypical codes and conventions which feature in film magazines. Some examples of these are featuring a broad range of cover lines which may attract different audiences of readers, featuring upcoming film titles, large differing fonts and sizes between cover lines to differentiate each article. Some other techniques are directly addressing the reader, using superlative language and vocabulary to fully engage the reader. I plan to use these codes and conventions in the production of making my film magazine front cover in order to make it as visually pleasing, persuasive to buy and successful magazine cover.
As all 3 of my magazine cover examples feature mid-shots of actors, I will use this in my magazine cover too.

Genre-specific film posters, trailer analysis and research -
Research into the specific genre of horror film trailers have outlined the rough outline and expectations which audiences demand to see within the trailer. Todorov's equilibrium theory is supported by the Shining and Nightmare on Elm Street trailers' as the audience travel with the trailer.
